Knowledge-based economy appears to be influenced by challenges from increasing globalization as well as concerns about intense competition for foreign direct investment particularly from relatively labor surplus and low-waged economies in the region and elsewhere. The move towards knowledge-based economy as has been pointed out earlier by the ex-Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir Mohamad is part of a wider plan to become a fully developed and knowledge-rich nation by 2020. As agreed by Scarborough, Swan and Preston, (1999), Sohraby and Abedin (2005), Adnan and Khairul (2005), knowledge-based efforts have been primarily focused on developing new applications of information technology, complemented to a lesser degree with implementing new organizational forms. The link between issues on managing knowledge and strategy and the impact of these variables toward the performance of the organization, has basically been overlooked and unfortunately, not well-developed into corporate strategy and generally not even considered (Raja Suzana 2002, 2004; Kalling, 2003; Tsai, 2001). In order to develop Malaysia’s private companies to enhance their organizational performance, they need to make their objectives and practices consistent with organization’s vision and policy.
Due to limited empirical sources on the strategic linking between knowledge issues and corporate strategic agenda of organizations, this study focuses primarily on the influence of managing knowledge as a key moderating variable. The theoretical model used in this study will focus on the empirical data among the public-listed organizations comprised of consumer products, the industrial products and the services industries in the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia.
